EDMONSON FAMILY FEUD; IT'S NOT JUST A CROSSTOWN RIVALRY FOR USC FRESHMAN.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

Malika Edmonson was among the nation's top recruited sprinters as a high school senior last year, attracting scholarship interest from top-notch track programs at USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. , Arizona State, Purdue and South Carolina South Carolina, state of the SE United States. ``Malika took her recruiting trips. But the bottom line is she had two choices, UCLA or USC,'' Warren said.

Malika, who has had no coach other than her mother and father, was part of a USC freshman recruiting class which was rated No. 1 in the nation by Track & Field News magazine.

, Malika was the 1996 state champion in the 100 and 200 as a junior. Last season, she teamed with her younger sister Miya, now a sophomore, on the Vikings' 400 relay team, which twice broke the national high school record.

One daughter at USC has been enough for Barbara this season.

A former world record holder in the 50, 100 and 200 and a member of the U.S. National Track and Field Hall of Fame, Barbara said she was braced for playing the role of mother and coach this season. But she concedes she wasn't prepared for everything.

Malika created commotion earlier this season by showing up to practice with a butterfly tattoo on the back of her right shoulder. She also has her first boyfriend - Trojans basketball player Jeff Trepagnier Jeffery (Jeff) Trepagnier (born July 11 1979 in Los Angeles, California) is an African American professional basketball player. ``You hate to see any of your daughters go out with boyfriends,'' Barbara said. ``I knew somewhere down the line it had to happen. But when it happens, it's like now? Why couldn't you wait four years? And the tattoo? I'll hate it as long as it's on her back. And if she gets another one, I won't talk to her for awhile.''

There have also been other standoffs between mother and daughter - on and off the track - along with nightly telephone calls to Malika's apartment, which she shares with three freshman teammates.

``She's a parent, but I am sure her parents weren't making her come home when she was in college,'' Malika said. ``I think she tries to set an example with me. She makes me work harder than everybody else in practice.''

Barbara said she is simply staking her territory.

``Sometimes Malika forgets she's at school and not at home,'' Barbara said. ``If I had been a regular coach, it would have been a different story. If I don't set a precedent on it, then it's going to be, `You're picking on me.' I have to tell her, I'll talk with you as a coach right now. I'll talk to you as a mother in the office.''

``When we go to a game, he'll be totally UCLA,'' Barbara said about her husband. ``He's always in UCLA colors and praying the Trojans do terrible. And I'll be having the same thoughts about the Bruins. Every opportunity he gets to bag on SC, he will. But I've got help this year - his daughter.''
