EDITORIAL YES ON JESSICA'S LAW PROP. 83 TOUGH ON CHILD MOLESTERS.

PROPOSITION 83, also known as Jessica's Law, is perhaps the toughest law yet on convicted sexual predators of children.

It keeps child molesters in jail from 25 years to life. It allows authorities to prosecute child-pornography crimes as felonies, rather than just misdemeanors. And it puts tough new restrictions -- such as GPS tracking for life -- on child molesters once they are released from prison so they pose less of a threat to society.

The residency restriction, which keeps sex offenders from living within 2,000 feet of a park or school, would give many pause about Proposition 83. The limitations could force them to move to rural areas or less-populated sections of town where there is less law enforcement to keep an eye on them. For those of us content to see child rapists exiled from polite society altogether, this doesn't sound like a bad deal at all. As well, authorities can keep virtual track of offenders with mandatory GPS trackers that the violators will be forced to pay for.

Critics say this law is too expensive, that the state has plenty of laws to keep sexual predators off the streets and that this one goes too far. We disagree. This is just far enough to keep children from being abused by sexual predators.

Vote yes on Proposition 83.
