EDITORIAL WEEK IN REVIEW.A roundup of some of our more important editorials this past weekMan of the hour The events of Sept. 11 have transformed New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani from a lame-duck, sometimes arrogant mayor into a steady, reassuring leader and a humble public servant. Why can't all politicians be like Mayor Rudy? Air support Bailing out the aviation industry in its time of crisis is the right thing to do, but airlines should make some concessions in exchange for their subsidy. First among them: Embrace a regional approach to L.A. airport expansion. Consent discontent To get an idea of what a federal consent decree will do for the LAPD, just see the havoc a decree has wrought in the LAUSD. Hungry white elephant White Elephant Any investment that nobody wants because it is unprofitable.Notes: The term 'White Elephant' is derived from Thailand, where an Albino (white) elephant was given to unfavored people by the ruler. Because these elephants were sacred and not permitted to work, it was a burden to the owner as it would eat up all the owner's money until he/she became destitute. See also: Falling Knife The Los Angeles Convention Center is an example of throwing good money after bad.
