EDITORIAL THINKING SMALL COOPERATION ACROSS THE REGION WILL HELP CREATE REAL TRANSPORTATION SOLUTIONS.

IN the dreams of regional planners there are subways, bullet trains, new freeways and other long-range, big-ticket items that could serve commuters in 20 or 30 years.

Thank goodness, then, that a trio of cities have taken it upon themselves to think smaller to serve their residents.

Glendale, Burbank and Pasadena are joining forces and laying out $90,000 to pay for a study that would look at creating a bus or light rail that hooks up local riders with hubs of the MTA's Red Line, Gold Line and the soon-to-open Orange Line across the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

The transportation corridor would fill a serious gap in public transportation by serving high-traffic areas such as Old Town Pasadena Built on the foundation of one of the oldest, most beautiful and most prosperous cities in California, Old Pasadena arose from the ashes of a decaying bowery that had a well deserved patina of homeless and hippie. , the Burbank Media Center and Universal City.

Imagine, going from Pasadena to Warner Center on public transit without the hassle of gridlocked grid·lock

Kudos to the three cities

for starting this effort. If successful, it will surely encourage others to come up with projects that serve real people, not political egos.

Although the cities have the wherewithal to initiate this linking corridor, they don't have the means to build such a project. As such, they are hoping their efforts will catch the attention of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the federal government, which do have the means.

needs to incorporate it into its long-range plan.

It's not a grand or sexy project, but it is exactly the right sort to ensure that the neighborhoods and communities of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  have the ability to use the billion-dollar projects.

has expressed interest in the proposal, saying it would be a better use of taxpayer money than ``gold-plated'' subways.

With gas prices hitting records across Southern California, this is the perfect time for transportation planners to think smaller. If they can come up with quick, cheap and realistic ways for commuters to get out of their cars today, they should have no problem getting the support they need for the big projects tomorrow.
