EDITORIAL SUCCESS STORY CHARTER SCHOOLS ATTRACT DEDICATED EDUCATORS LIKE NORM ISAACS.


BY all accounts, Norm Isaacs is one of the most successful principals in the Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population. . His Millikan Middle School in Sherman Oaks has won numerous awards. The California Department of Education The California Department of Education is a California agency that oversees public education. The Department oversees funding, testing, and holds local educational agencies accountable for student achievement.  named it a ``School To Watch'' earlier this month.

But Isaacs is voluntarily giving up his post at Millikan - and within the Los Angeles Unified School District - to take the reins to take the guidance or government; to assume control.

Charter schools, which are fully public and open to all, are not guaranteed a student body. Unlike traditional public schools, if they fail, their administrators pay a price.

But because they're free of many of the regulations that govern traditional public schools, charters offer tremendous opportunity for innovation. That must make them very attractive to dedicated educators like Isaacs, and it's no doubt a big part of why they're so successful.
