They are the Valley's homeless and hungry, whose numbers have grown this past year because of the sluggish economy Sluggish Economy

Ironically, this is the day that few of the hungry or homeless actually go unfed. The communitywide compassion that tends to well up around the holidays will see to that. At churches and shelters everywhere, thousands of Thanksgiving dinners The centerpiece of contemporary Thanksgiving in the United States is a large meal, starring a large roasted turkey. All of the dishes in the traditional American version of Thanksgiving Dinner are made from foods native to North America, according to tradition the Pilgrims received these  will be served to people who wouldn't be able to get one anywhere else.

But the hungry and homeless will still be with us tomorrow, after the donated turkeys are all gone. They will be here after Christmas, when the number of donations and volunteers at local relief centers again diminishes.

 Council, which oversees 20 local food pantries, reports the slow economy has driven up the demand for its services while at the same time undercutting its supply - more people need help, but the amount of help has held constant.

Despite a successful, three-week, 7-ton food drive, the council is having a hard time keeping its shelves stocked. It anticipates some of its pantries running out of supplies by year's end - that is, unless generous Valley residents can find it in their hearts to keep the donations coming.
