EDITORIAL SEND A MESSAGE.IF you're like most registered voters in Los Angeles, chances are you don't plan to vote today - either because you're disgusted with the self-serving self-serving adj. referring to a question asked of a party to a lawsuit or a statement by that person that serves no purpose and provides no evidence, but only argues or reinforces the legal position of that party. Example: Question asked by a lawyer of his own client: "Are you the sort of person who would never do anything dishonest?" Such a question may be objected to as "self-serving" by the opposing lawyer, and then will be disallowed by the judge, political system, don't like either candidate for mayor or you're simply lazy. While you might think you're protesting politics as usual, what you're really doing is enabling it. The only reason politicians are so cynical, so corruptible, is because they can be. Tiny voter turnout lets them ignore the majority of their constituents. If 70 percent instead of 30 percent of L.A. voters turned out to the polls today, the winner would get a clear message that the old way of doing politics simply won't work any more. The next four years can be shaped dramatically depending on what you do - or don't do - today. Make a difference. Vote. |
