At the end of the past session, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger (German pronunciation (IPA): [ˈaɐ̯nɔlt ˈaloɪ̯s ˈʃvaɐ̯ʦənˌʔɛɡɐ]  struck a half-dozen deals with tribes: 20,000 more slot machines in exchange for more money for the state. Schwarzenegger hoped the Legislature would quickly sign off on the deal, but the Democratic leadership balked balk  
v. balked, balk·ing, balks

v.intr.
1. To stop short and refuse to go on: The horse balked at the jump.

, wanting more time to sort through the details.

Which is reasonable, given that Gov. Gray Davis gave away the store to the tribes years ago. While Schwarzenegger's deal could be good, because the tribes have the state over a barrel, it's worth taking a close look before agreeing to anything.

Meanwhile, if state legislators really want to get back together again, surely they can find a more pressing issue to discuss.
