EDITORIAL PRICE CREEPS COST OF NEW LAPD HQ CONTINUES TO SOAR.

 Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  city officials' plan to build a new police center was just two months ago. Then, officials said the project would cost $340 million, and maybe even go as high as $383 million.

That was a big jump from the budgeted $200 million -- to say nothing of the original $150 million price tag.

But now the price has gone up yet again. The City Council's Budget and Finance Committee's latest estimate is $396 million. And officials warn it could go as high as $420 million.

The price will probably go even higher than that because the city is hiring contractor Tutor-Saliba -- infamous in·fa·mous

So don't be shocked if this deal eventually cracks the half-billion- dollar mark. Given the way the cost has soared so far, it's all but inevitable.

And that's a lot of money to spend on a new headquarters for a Police Department that can't even hire enough new cops to fill it.
