 Deaton estimated it was going to cost about $150 million to build a new police headquarters to replace the aging Parker Center Parker Center is the headquarters for the Los Angeles Police Department, and is located in Downtown LA. It is named for former LAPD chief William H. Parker. Originally with the prosaic name, the Police Administration Building, ground for the center was broken on December 30, 1952 .

A few months later, the price jumped to at least $200 million. By last week, after the city was already committed to the project, the cost had inflated to $305 million.

City leaders were probably hoping no one would notice that occasionally, and without explanation, they just upwardly adjusted the cost estimate.

 the game that officials like to play, selling the public on an idea with reasonable estimates so it seems like such a deal. Then, even before the foundation is poured, the cost doubles or even triples.

This is more than just a price creep - it's a fraud.
