EDITORIAL PRAYER, REMEMBRANCE AMERICANS UNITE IN GRIEF AND HOPE.IN the aftermath of tragedy and the anticipation of military action, it's worth taking some time to slow down, to pause and reflect. President George W. Bush has called for today to be ``a national day of prayers and remembrance,'' as it should be. Americans have overwhelmingly put aside their differences and found our shared humanity far outweighs any of the ethnic, religious or political differences we too often allow to divide us. On this day, we should come together to pray for peace. War has been thrust upon us, and the nation has no choice but to fight. But we can pray that it will be no longer than it must, that casualties will be at a minimum and that innocent lives will be spared. We should also join in prayer for the victims in New York New York, state, United States New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of and Washington - those poor souls buried in rubble, whose number are so great that we cannot begin to estimate them. Let's pray for their eternal rest Noun 1. eternal rest - euphemisms for death (based on an analogy between lying in a bed and in a tomb); "she was laid to rest beside her husband"; "they had to put their family pet to sleep" eternal sleep, quietus, sleep, rest , as well as the comfort and peace of the friends, families and loved ones loved ones npl → seres mpl queridos loved ones npl → proches mpl et amis chers loved ones love npl they've left behind. And we should say a prayer for the heroes - the firefighters, the police officers, the emergency and medical crews that have risked their lives and worked around the clock healing and saving others. Especially deserving of our remembrance are the martyrs

As he was giving last rites to a dying firefighter, Judge was himself killed by a large piece of falling debris. When firefighters carried his body back to his church, they reportedly joined arm in arm with several Franciscan friars and recited the prayer of St. Francis. It's a prayer that speaks to the universal truths held by people of all faiths, of anyone who loves love and cherishes goodness: Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love. Where there is injury, let me sow pardon. Where there is error, let me sow truth. Where there is despair, let me sow hope. Where there is darkness, let me sow light. Where there is sadness, let me sow joy. Oh Divine Master, grant that I may not seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood, as to understand, to be loved, as to love. For it is in giving that we receive. It is in pardoning, that we are pardoned. It is in dying, that we are born to eternal life. |
