EDITORIAL ONLINE SOLUTIONS IT'S GOING TO TAKE MORE THAN A WEB SITE TO REDUCE VIOLENCE IN THE COUNTY.
SHERIFF Lee Baca has unveiled his newest crime-fighting tool: A Web
site for the public to see details of killings in Los Angeles County,
www.lacountymurders.com.
Baca's playing the odds that more information to the people
will help his detectives solve more crimes. Plus, he needs all the help
he can get to counter the rising tide of homicides.
Although Los Angeles is fading fast from its one-time distinction
as America's killing-est city, the county is going the other way.
Halfway through 2005, the Sheriff's Department has logged 207
homicides. Last year, the county had a total of 383.
Hopefully, the effort will pay off in solving some crimes, but Baca
must know it will take more than a Web site to stop the killings in the
first place. That will take old-fashioned policing.
