EDITORIAL ONE FOR THE 44TH DISTRICT.THE 44th Assembly District seat is attracting a lot of attention as seven candidates seek to replace incumbent Jack Scott. On the Democratic side, the Daily News endorses Carol Liu, the mayor of La Canada Flintridge. Liu, a moderate Democrat, is a former high school teacher and administrator who could bring insight into proposed educational reforms. But because of her experience as mayor of a smaller community, she also has a broader vision for the office, including being a strong advocate for a transit zone serving the Greater San Fernando Valley. Liu is one of three Democrats running in the March 7 primary. She is running against Democrat Barry Gordon, a former president of the Screen Actors Guild and a two-time candidate for Congress, and Democrat Diana Peterson-More, a management consultant and lawyer. All three candidates have solid credentials and all are thoughtful, responsive candidates. Gordon, who has gained considerable exposure following two unsuccessful congressional races, cites his experience working with legislators during his years as president of the Screen Actors Guild. However, he seems not as informed on transit, transportation and education as Liu. Peterson-More is a moderate, pro-business Democrat who understands Valley issues and supports local control, but who lacks the experience of being an elected official that Liu has. On the Republican side, the Daily News makes no endorsement. Three Republicans are running in the March 7 primary - Susan Carpenter- McMillan, the former spokeswoman for Paula Jones, who sued President Clinton for sexual harassment; Damian Jones, a public affairs director for Fannie Mae and ally of former Gov. Pete Wilson; and Robert Wagner, a former South Pasadena councilman. All are earnest people but, unfortunately, none seems to have the broad focus, background or temperament expected in a candidate for state office. The heart of the 44th Assembly District may be in Pasadena, but the area's representative is also responsible for communities on the eastern edge of the San Fernando Valley, including Sunland, Tujunga, La Crescenta, Montrose, La Canada Flintridge and a part of Glendale. Assemblyman Scott, D-Pasadena, who is term-limited out, has not always fought for the Valley side of his district. The next representative should be someone who understands the issues in all parts of the district and represents citizens throughout that district. |
