EDITORIAL NO ON PROP. 81.

THE $600 million state library building bond crept crept

Past tense and past participle of creep.

 quietly onto the June ballot.

It was a shrewd move by the measure's supporters. They are clearly relying on the fact that our highly literate society generally has warm and fuzzy fuzz·y

1. Covered with fuzz.

2. Of or resembling fuzz.

3. Not clear; indistinct: a fuzzy recollection of past events.

feelings when it comes to public libraries, and would unquestioningly vote the measure through.

But that would be a mistake, especially for Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. .

Not that Angelenos don't love libraries. We do. We have loved them to the tune of $300 million in two bonds in the last 17 years to build new libraries and reconstruct re·con·struct

others. The result has been attractive and state- of-the art libraries and community centers that serve every nook of the city.

Angelenos have already paid plenty to improve the state's libraries. Not only have we invested in our own, but we helped to pay for Proposition 14, the $350 million state library bond passed just six years ago.

It's not fair to ask L.A. voters to pay again to improve the libraries of other cities whose residents haven't been willing to make the same investment that we have. And it's unseemly for Sacramento to hit up voters with another library bond so soon after Proposition 14.

It's time It's Time was a successful political campaign run by the Australian Labor Party (ALP) under Gough Whitlam at the 1972 election in Australia. Campaigning on the perceived need for change after 23 years of conservative (Liberal Party of Australia) government, Labor put forward a  for the state's cities and communities to do their share to support their own public libraries. That's what we did in Los Angeles, and that's what Marin County, San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  and Palm Springs ought to do as well.

That's why Angelenos and all Californians should vote no on Proposition 81.
