EDITORIAL NO CREDIT DUE HAHN LAYS CLAIM TO OTHERS' ACCOMPLISHMENTS.REALIZING that support in the San Fernando Valley is what got him elected mayor of Los Angeles - and the loss of it could cost him re- election - James Hahn is trying to mend fences he broke unnecessarily. Too bad he's trying to do it by taking credit for other people's accomplishments. In his State of the Valley speech before the Valley Industry and Commerce Association this week, Hahn cited construction of new libraries in the Valley and the new police division in the North Valley as proof that under his leadership, the Valley is at long last getting its fair share. Nice try, except that the new libraries were part of a bond measure passed during Mayor Richard Riordan's tenure - with specific locations spelled out. The North Valley police station was supposed to be built more than a decade ago, but City Hall looted the funds and betrayed its promise. And even now that the station is being built, there's serious questions about whether it will be properly staffed. Why can't Hahn just run on his real record in the Valley? Because he ran a vicious campaign against cityhood, one financed through unethical and sometimes illegal fund-raising practices. He turned a deaf ear to the Valley then, and now he's trying to sell the idea that he really heard the Valley's concerns? His record speaks louder than his hollow words. |
