EDITORIAL NEW ATTITUDE DEMOCRATIC LEADERS CHANGE THEIR TUNE ON CAR TAX.

WHAT a difference a successful recall election can make!

Back during the campaign, when Arnold Schwarzenegger Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger (German pronunciation (IPA): [ˈaɐ̯nɔlt ˈaloɪ̯s ˈʃvaɐ̯ʦənˌʔɛɡɐ]  promised to repeal Gov. Gray Davis' tripling of the hated car tax, prominent Democrats said it couldn't be done - not without legislative approval.

But now California Attorney General The California Attorney General is the State Attorney General of the government of the state of California in the USA. The officer's duty is to ensure that "the laws of the state are uniformly and adequately enforced" (California Constitution, Article V, Section 13.  Bill Lockyer William Westwood "Bill" Lockyer (born May 8, 1941) is the current State Treasurer of California. Prior to this, he served as California's Attorney General and head of the Department of Justice for the U.S. state of California.  and Controller Steve Westly Steven Paul Westly (born August 27, 1957, in Arcadia, California) is an American businessman and politician. He was the State Controller of California from 2003 to 2007 and was one of the top two candidates in the Democratic primary for Governor of California in the 2006 election.  say reducing the tax is well within the governor's powers. All Schwarzenegger has to do is declare an end to the state of economic emergency that the Davis administration used to justify the increase in the first place.

Clearly, in some circles, the lesson of recall has been learned: People don't want obstruction; they want results.

If the lesson sticks, it alone will have made recall worthwhile.
