EDITORIAL MONEY MATTERS.
It would be nice to think the June gubernatorial primary campaign
is all about the important issues facing California, such as failing
schools, traffic and smart growth.
But, at this point, it's really all about the money -
who's got it, who needs it and who's rich enough to dig into
their own pockets. The main Democratic rivals, Steve Westly and Phil
Angelides, have both already raised many millions of dollars for their
campaigns, much of Westly's coming from his own multimillion-dollar
eBay fortune. Throw in the personal and political wealth of Gov. Arnold
Schwarzenegger, and it's sure to be a big-spending campaign.
Political analysts estimate that by the time election day comes,
between $50 million and $100 million will have been spent. If nothing
else, it reminds one that this is not a job that's open to regular
folks.
