EDITORIAL MAKING LIKE A TREE SARNO LEAVES DONE.LISA The first personal computer to include integrated software and use a graphical interface. Modeled after the Xerox Star and introduced in 1983 by Apple, it was ahead of its time, but never caught on due to its $10,000 price and slow speed. Sarno was never supposed to be the long-term head of Los Angeles' Department of Neighborhood Empowerment -- just an interim, short-term placeholder place·hold·er n. 1. One who holds an office or place, especially: a. One who acts as a deputy or proxy. b. One who holds an appointed office in a government. 2. . But even that, it turns out, was too long. Prompted by complaints from members of the city's neighborhood councils Neighborhood councils are governmental or non-governmental bodies composed of local people who handle neighborhood problems. They can be found in many cities throughout the world. , Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has removed Sarno from the position. He's yet to name a new temporary replacement, but in the meantime Adv. 1. in the meantime - during the intervening time; "meanwhile I will not think about the problem"; "meantime he was attentive to his other interests"; "in the meantime the police were notified" meantime, meanwhile he's put Sarno in charge of overseeing his "million trees" initiative. She must be thrilled. Planting umpteen saplings in our concretized desert landscape must seem easy compared with sowing the seeds of democracy in the city's barren and corrupt political climate. It's likely Sarno is no more responsible for her failings at DONE than was her predecessor, Greg Nelson. It's a thankless job, trying to motivate and lead quasi-governmental bodies that are destined des·tine tr.v. des·tined, des·tin·ing, des·tines 1. To determine beforehand; preordain: a foolish scheme destined to fail; a film destined to become a classic. 2. for frustration due to their lack of authority and funding. So Sarno has moved on to (literally) greener pastures, free from the limitations of DONE. Too bad the same can't be said for the neighborhood councils themselves. |
