EDITORIAL MAKE VALLEY VOTES COUNT THE PEOPLE WE PUT INTO OFFICE WE HOPE WILL BRING NEW IDEAS AND ATTITUDES TO THESES POSTS.EVERY election is important and every vote is important as last fall's Florida presidential fiasco showed us. On Tuesday, we will choose the next mayor and city attorney of Los Angeles. And many voters like those in the San Fernando Valley's 3rd and 5th districts will get to choose new City Council members. A Los Angeles Unified School District board member will be elected in the West Valley and Westside seat as will a Los Angeles Community College District board member elected at large. Valley voters have a special responsibility. The politicians acknowledge that the Valley will pretty much decide the mayoral race because it produces about half the city vote with just one-third of the people. If things go as expected, this is the last municipal election before the Valley secession issue goes before voters so whether you feel we should be part of the city of Los Angeles or not, you have a chance to elect people who will pull the city together and start solving its many problems. The people we put into office Tuesday hopefully will bring new ideas and attitudes to positions that desperately need them. Let's hope the winners will put an end to the favoritism and the power of special interests at City Hall and offer new respect for the values and interests of all sectors of the community. All our endorsements are included in the adjoining box. The decisions are yours - and we encourage you to exercise your right by voting. So get out your sample ballot now and pick the candidates who will respond to your concerns. And most of all, make sure you get to the voting booth Tuesday. Every vote counts. |
