OLD politicians may leave office, but they don't necessarily go away.

Not when there are lucrative commission and board appointments available.

The two latest incidences of this are the appointments of two former state senators to six-figure jobs on obscure boards by Senate President Pro Tem president pro tem

 Don Perata Don Perata (born April 30, 1945) is a California Democratic politician, who is the current President pro tempore of the California State Senate. He was elected to the post of President Pro Tempore in 2004. .

Former Sen. Liz Figueroa Liz Figueroa is a Democratic politician. She served as a California State Senator, representing the 10th district.

She ran for California Lieutenant Governor in the June 6th, 2006 California primary election, against fellow state senator Jackie Speier, and Insurance
 ran unsuccessfully in the June primary for lieutenant governor lieutenant governor

1. An elected official ranking just below the governor of a state in the United States.

2. The nonelective chief of government of a Canadian province.
, campaigning primarily on her being Salvadoran. We're not sure how that qualified her for an appointment to the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board. But that's her new gig, with an annual salary of $114,191.

Former Sen. Wes Chesbro had similar good luck with a new job on the California Integrated Waste Management Board with a $117,818 per year paycheck.

Not bad booby prizes.
