EDITORIAL FLYING START VILLARAIGOSA TAKES FIRST STEPS TO GUT LAX EXPANSION PLAN.

MAYOR Antonio Villaraigosa Antonio Ramon Villaraigosa (born Antonio (Tony) Ramon Villar, Jr. on January 23, 1953) is the mayor of Los Angeles, California. He is the first Latino mayor of Los Angeles since Cristobal Aguilar in 1872.  has set the stage for getting rid of the unacceptable excesses in former Mayor James Hahn's $11 billion, expansion-from-hell plan for Los Angeles International Airport “LAX” redirects here. The first steps were letting Hahn's Airport Commission members know their services no longer were needed while simultaneously reaching out to expansion opponents. Those moves signal that Villaraigosa's campaign vow to work toward a regional air traffic plan was more than hot air.

But the new mayor can't stop there. He must ground the LAX ``modernization'' plan before it takes off.

It shouldn't take much. No one seems to like the plan other than Hahn and the contractors, vendors and unions who stand to profit from a scheme that would make traffic worse, passengers less safe and air travel less appealing. All of this would cost the public $11 billion, or more likely much more than that when the work is finally done.

Villaraigosa has said he believes regionalizing air travel, in addition to limiting passengers at LAX, is the sensible future for Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  air traffic.

That's why they sued to block the plan that sailed through the City Council with a phony sleight-of-hand trick.

Villaraigosa's next task is to appoint people of honesty Honesty

The real opportunity for the mayor is to establish Los Angeles as a partner working fairly with smaller communities for the common good. That would mark a giant leap forward for Southern California and could be the start of tackling traffic, air pollution and other common problems.
