Between lawsuits, paternity pa·ter·ni·ty (p -tûr n -t )n. claims, mysterious deaths and drug struggles, this stripper-centerfold-heiress heiress n. feminine heir, often used to denote a woman who has received a large amount upon the death of a rich relative, as in the "department store heiress."-celebrity-mom was a train wreck in the making. And yet we watched, with morbid amusement. Now Smith is dead, leaving a baby girl behind. And suddenly her sad life -- once a national joke -- doesn't seem so funny any more. Celebrity dysfunction may be a spectator sport in America, but at moments like this, we realize that it's not so frivolous after all. These are real people, with real struggles and real suffering. Making Smith's self-destruction all the more pathetic is that for so long it served as popular entertainment. May she at last rest in peace. |
