Now Smith is dead, leaving a baby girl behind. And suddenly her sad life -- once a national joke -- doesn't seem so funny any more.

Celebrity dysfunction may be a spectator sport in America, but at moments like this, we realize that it's not so frivolous Of minimal importance; legally worthless.

A frivolous suit is one without any legal merit. In some cases, such an action might be brought in bad faith for the purpose of harrassing the defendant.
 after all.

These are real people, with real struggles and real suffering. Making Smith's self-destruction all the more pathetic is that for so long it served as popular entertainment.

May she at last rest in peace.
