EDITORIAL DRUG-INDUCED HAZE.THE reasoning behind the LAPD's loosening of prior drug-use restrictions for recruits earlier this year made a certain sense. Chief William Bratton argued, reasonably, that many otherwise law- abiding and upstanding people experimented with illegal drugs in their youth. Indeed, the LAPD 1. But the reason behind tightening those new rules, as explained by police and city officials, isn't quite as clear. According to according to prep. 1. But some experimenting with methamphetamine or heroin will. The LAPD rationale is that cocaine -- often known as a staple of well-to- do druggies -- is a serious drug. But heroin or meth meth n. Methamphetamine hydrochloride. -- also known as the poor man's Poor man's is a common slang term used to compare one thing with another. It is not necessarily a derogatory term. It is usually used in a sentence as "X is a poor man's Y", with "X" being the person or thing one is referring to, and "Y" being the superior but similar person or cocaine -- are very serious, hard-core drugs. This distinction without a difference might make sense on an internal level but it's not going to assuage as·suage tr.v. as·suaged, as·suag·ing, as·suag·es 1.
