EDITORIAL DMV COVER CHARGE? STATE CAN SAVE MONEY BY LETTING MOTORISTS REGISTER ONLINE FOR FREE.

JUST in case trips to the Department of Motor Vehicles In the United States of America, Department of Motor Vehicles (or DMV) is a commonly used name of the government agency of a U.S. state which administers the registration of automobiles (e.g., by issuing license plates), and/or the licensing of drivers (e.g.  weren't infuriating enough, members of the state Senate have come up with a way to make them even more so: Charging motorists $5 for coming to DMV DMV

Imagine that - paying to stand in line to get poor service. Oh boy!

As it stands now, people pay $5 not to go to the DMV, because the state whacks motorists who renew their vehicle registrations online with a $5 surcharge An overcharge or additional cost.

A surcharge is an added liability imposed on something that is already due, such as a tax on tax. It also refers to the penalty a court can impose on a fiduciary for breaching a duty.

, D-San Mateo, has figured that much out. ``I think we've got to get rid of (the online surcharge),'' she says, ``because it's costing much more than $5 for people to come into the office.''

No kidding. Unlike charging customers for office visits, eliminating the online surcharge would be a good way for the state to cut down on expenses without hitting taxpayers with one more fee.

There's no reason to create any more disincentives for DMV office visits - there are plenty already.
