Earthquakes, mudslides, firestorms and other calamities frequently shake up this region, and that makes folks here able to truly empathize em·pa·thize v. To feel empathy in relation to another person. with the current suffering on the Gulf Coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina Perhaps that's why so many Southland south·land or South·land n. A region in the south of a country or an area. south land·er n.Noun 1. residents have felt moved to personally help in the relief effort. In doing so, they have joined the nation to donate more than $500 million so far to help the thousands of people whose lives and property were upended by the hurricane and resulting flooding. Both private citizens and business have dug deep to help with the donations, some just breaking out the checkbook and others gathering and delivering food and supplies to the needy folks in and around New Orleans New Orleans (ôr`lēənz –lənz, ôrlēnz`), city (2006 pop. 187,525), coextensive with Orleans parish, SE La., between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain, 107 mi (172 km) by water from the river mouth; founded .
