THE passing of Gita, the 48-year-old elephant at the Los Angeles Zoo The Los Angeles Zoo founded in 1966, is a large zoo located in Los Angeles, California, USA.

The Zoo, located in Los Angeles' Griffith Park, is home to 1,200 animals from around the world.
 was lamentable -- just as it is any time someone dies a death that seems untimely.

It's not clear what caused the death of the pachyderm, or whether it had anything to do with the small zoo enclosure that has been the source of much debate among animal advocates and city leaders. And 48 isn't an uncommonly young age for elephants, which can live up to 60.

 Gita's death or place the blame on any one person. Indeed, living in a zoo, or even a sanctuary, is not the ideal condition for any living thing bred to live wild. And whatever its past faults, the zoo is moving toward building a new and significantly larger enclosure for the elephants.
