The Zoo, located in Los Angeles' Griffith Park, is home to 1,200 animals from around the world. was lamentable -- just as it is any time someone dies a death that seems untimely. It's not clear what caused the death of the pachyderm, or whether it had anything to do with the small zoo enclosure that has been the source of much debate among animal advocates and city leaders. And 48 isn't an uncommonly young age for elephants, which can live up to 60.
