In the court of public opinion, she won hands down, attracting widespread support over a police department that seemed more interested in enforcing the rules than in protecting public safety.

In the court of law, it was another matter. Superior Court Commissioner Jeffrey Harkavy accepted the officer's testimony that Coyle illegally entered the crosswalk after the ``don't walk'' sign started blinking, upholding her citation.

But mindful of the controversy, Coyle's age and what she's been through, Harkavy waived the $114 fee.

And that's probably the best possible outcome, one that -- at last -- upholds both the law and common sense.
