EDITORIAL COUNTY TAX BREAK LOCAL OFFICIALS HAVE A LOT OF EXPLAINING TO DO.


REGARDLESS of whether attorney Rob Pool can win his class-action lawsuit against Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County, its auditor-controller and its tax collector, he has raised some good questions.

Pool charges that county officials have violated vi·o·late

, but that shouldn't stop the county from coming clean on whether it has properly refunded all the taxpayers it has overcharged.

The job of tax authorities isn't to bring in as much money as they can, but to treat taxpayers as fairly as possible. That means collecting extra payments whenever they are due, and being every bit as vigilant about paying out refunds.
