Why is the county leasing buildings for welfare offices when it already has thousands of structures in its portfolio, and buying could prove cheaper in the long run?

, taxpayers hope - and not just in the case of these troubling deals, which the supervisors themselves approved. County government is a massive bureaucracy that sits atop a fortune, with very little oversight or political accountability, as supervisors are virtually guaranteed lifetime tenure.

It may be time to give close scrutiny to the whole county contracting process - to see what taxpayers are truly paying for.
