EDITORIAL COMMON CONS.THE saddest thing about the investigation that uncovered massive fraud in the county home-care program is that it's so ho-hum. Revelations that scammers are ripping off taxpayers to the tune of millions of dollars every year have become the rule rather than the exception. That Los Angeles County prosecutors are seeking the arrest of several people for ripping off the home-care program for millions in false billings is unfortunate, but not surprising. Anytime there's a big pot of money around, there will be people who set about to illegally get a piece of it. And while the money may be intended to aid needy members of society, that's not a deterrent to self-serving self-serving adj. referring to a question asked of a party to a lawsuit or a statement by that person that serves no purpose and provides no evidence, but only argues or reinforces the legal position of that party. Example: Question asked by a lawyer of his own client: "Are you the sort of person who would never do anything dishonest?" Such a question may be objected to as "self-serving" by the opposing lawyer, and then will be disallowed by the judge, criminals. It's a good thing (convention) Good Thing - (From the 1930 Sellar and Yeatman parody "1066 And All That") Often capitalised; always pronounced as if capitalised. 1. Self-evidently wonderful to anyone in a position to notice: "The Trailblazer's 19.2 Kbaud PEP mode with on-the-fly Lempel-Ziv compression is a Good Thing for sites relaying netnews". 2. that the county is going after these scammers. But this case also underscores that waste and fraud continue to drain taxpayer funds because government isn't doing enough to stop it. |
