EDITORIAL CHANGE OF FORTUNE.


A $2 million grant to help at-risk LAUSD LAUSD Los Angeles Unified School District (Los Angeles, CA)  students stay in school and get to college signifies more than just hope for students. It represents a possible change of fortune for the troubled school district's reputation.

The money comes from the Bill & Melinda Gates Melinda French Gates (born Melinda Ann French on August 15, 1964) is a former unit manager for several Microsoft products: Publisher, Microsoft Bob, Encarta, and Expedia. In 1994, she married Bill Gates, founder, chairman, and former chief software architect of Microsoft.  and The James Irvine James Irvine may refer to:
  • James Irvine (1735-1819), Pennsylvania politician, Vice-President (i.e. Lt. Governor) of Pennsylvania.
  • James Irvine (chemist) (1877-1952), chemist and vice-chancellor of the University of St Andrews
 foundations, and more grants could follow -- if the LAUSD makes good on its promises to reform.

The Gates Foundation Gates Foundation: see Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. , with its billions to invest in education, has been reluctant to give grants to the country's second-largest school district despite its obvious neediness because officials lacked commitment to reform.

Clearly the grant-givers have changed their minds, and say if the district uses the new grant wisely, it might make more investments.

The district owes it to the students who will benefit from this generosity -- as well as the future students who might benefit from future grants -- not to squander squan·der
