EDITORIAL CARDENAS STEPS UP COUNCILMAN TAKES THE LEAD ON VAN NUYS AIRPORT STALEMATE.

FOR years, Van Nuys Airport's future has been on hold because of the recalcitrance of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  city officials, leaving businesses, aviators Well-known aviators
People largely known for their contributions to the history of aviation
While all of these people were pilots (and some still are), many are also noted for contributions in areas such as aircraft design and manufacturing, navigation or
 and the community in limbo.

But finally progress appears to be at hand.

Taking the lead in breaking the stalemate, City Councilman Tony Cardenas Tony Cardenas served in the California State Assembly. In the Assembly, he had the powerful position of chair of the Budget Committee. He is now a Los Angeles City Councilman, representing the 6th district, which includes parts of the San Fernando Valley.  signed on to a community-supported compromise - Alternative J - which would allow the airport to make more money on lucrative jet service while still allowing owners of propeller planes to use the facility.

It sounds like a common-sense balancing of interests, but after a year, the city's Board of Airport Commissioners and the Planning Commission Noun 1. planning commission - a commission delegated to propose plans for future activities and developments
commission, committee - a special group delegated to consider some matter; "a committee is a group that keeps minutes and loses hours" - Milton Berle
has yet to take it up - perpetuating the city's reputation for being indifferent to concerns of business and community alike.

Perhaps now a councilman has thrown his weight behind the proposal, it has a better chance of seeing the light of day. But that's only half the challenge. It's also up to Cardenas and other city officials to modify Alternative J so it provides solutions to the noise and flight-time problems that burden the airport's neighbors.

If he can pull off a compromise serving the whole community, Cardenas could well be the hero that Van Nuys Airport Van Nuys Airport (IATA: VNY, ICAO: KVNY, FAA LID: VNY) is a public airport located in Van Nuys, California in the San Fernando Valley, within the Los Angeles city limits.  and the surrounding community have long been waiting for.
