EDITORIAL BOND BICKERING POLITICS SHOULD NOT DOOM PUBLIC-WORKS PLAN.

LIKE everything in Sacramento, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's massive public-works project to rebuild the state's crumbling infrastructure has become mired in politics.

Schwarzenegger unveiled the 10-year, $222.6 billion construction project during his 2006 State of the State speech. Much of the money will come from state bonds, and the first of them must be approved by voters in June.

But legislators are sniping about the details, and have criticized almost every aspect of the plan. For sure there are important details to work out. But no one wins if the excessive politics dooms the initiative altogether.

Politics must be set aside, or else it could derail the infrastructure rebuilding project, marking yet another failure for the people coming out of Sacramento.
