EDITORIAL BACK IN BUSINESS GOVERNOR MAKES GOOD ON PROMISE TO PACOIMA.

LIKE any politician, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger (German pronunciation (IPA): [ˈaɐ̯nɔlt ˈaloɪ̯s ˈʃvaɐ̯ʦənˌʔɛɡɐ]  has his faults. But to his credit, he admits his mistakes and takes responsibility for his failures.

One of those mistakes was state officials' dumping dumping, selling goods at less than the normal price, usually as exports in international trade. It may be done by a producer, a group of producers, or a nation.  the Northeast Valley Enterprise Zone, even though Schwarzenegger had agreed to change state law so it would remain.

The move was a blow to an important corner of the Valley, which needed the 20-year-old designation to build its modest commercial core and spur rejuvenation Rejuvenation

of the neighborhood. The loss of enterprise-zone status would have cost jobs as companies found their state tax credits ending, and it would have set back redevelopment efforts. It would have meant hardship, but would not have been a death blow.

neighborhoods have been subject to the same real-estate squeeze as the rest of the city, resulting in more residential development than was expected. In fact, it was all the new housing that affected the enterprise-zone status. The state requires that every area so designated retain 51 percent of its land for commercial or industrial use.

But losing the status next year would have exacerbated the effects of the real-estate boom and made it even tougher to keep the residential, commercial and industrial balance that's key to a healthy and self-sustaining self-sus·tain·ing

On Monday Monday: see week. , Schwarzenegger fixed that. He didn't restore the Northeast Valley Enterprise Zone per se, but expanded the boundaries of the Hollywood Enterprise Zone to encompass the area. Whatever works.

It's a compromise, to be sure, but it's also an acknowledgment acknowledgment, in law, formal declaration or admission by a person who executed an instrument (e.g., a will or a deed) that the instrument is his. The acknowledgment is made before a court, a notary public, or any other authorized person.  that the state messed up. And that's something of a Christmas miracle. It seems like a simple process: Make an error, admit it, fix it, then move on. But in the world of politics, admitting error is one of the rarest things.

Kudos for state officials and the governor for making this simple, yet uncommon, decision for the benefit of a long ill-treated region.
