, considered by many to be the mother of the civil-rights movement. But, in a very real sense, Parks will never die. She is a woman who will live in history as the person who sparked the civil-rights struggle of the 20th century with a simple act of courage on Dec. 1, 1955.

The diminutive seamstress and activist became world famous when she refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man, thus defying the racist Jim Crow laws Jim Crow laws, in U.S. history, statutes enacted by Southern states and municipalities, beginning in the 1880s, that legalized segregation between blacks and whites. The name is believed to be derived from a character in a popular minstrel song.  of the day.
