EDITORIAL A RIVALRY REKINDLED UCLA'S STUNNING UPSET OF USC BRINGS BALANCE TO THE SPORTS SCENE.

AS the tears begin to subside in Trojan Town and the celebrations in Westwood quiet down, we can all take comfort in a welcome development: Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  is a two-team college football town once again.

Oh sure, University of Southern California The U.S. News & World Report ranked USC 27th among all universities in the United States in its 2008 ranking of "America's Best Colleges", also designating it as one of the "most selective universities" for admitting 8,634 of the almost 34,000 who applied for freshman admission  fans will tell you they liked it the way things have been the last several years, when the University of California, Los Angeles UCLA comprises the College of Letters and Science (the primary undergraduate college), seven professional schools, and five professional Health Science schools. Since 2001, UCLA has enrolled over 33,000 total students, and that number is steadily rising. , was their annual whipping boy.

But even fanatics have to admit that a rivalry is no fun without two worthy rivals. Spirited competition demands a fair distribution of the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.

And on Saturday, UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University)
UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
got more than enough thrills -- and USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. , more than enough agony -- to make up for any recent imbalance.

USC coach Pete Carroll's squad, for the first time in a long time, seemed human. And UCLA's coach Karl Dorrell's squad, for the first time in a long time, seemed worthy.

For USC, it was the end of the quest for a third title in four years, coming at the hands of the most hated rival. For UCLA, it was a return to respectability and a chance to be the best in L.A. again, if only for a day.

The rivalry is better than ever. We can't wait for next year's game.
