Sitting on the south-facing slope of Mount Hollywood in L.A.'s Griffith Park, it commands a view of the Los Angeles Basin, including downtown Los Angeles to the southeast, Hollywood to the south, and the as ``the hood ornament for all of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. .'' In a way, the observatory is just that -- a gorgeous icon perched high above L.A., the city's star attraction for stargazers of the celestial sort. It's a prominent symbol of Los Angeles and all that the city aspires to be -- forward-looking and unlimited in opportunity.
