EDITORIAL : TROJANS TRIUMPH.

THROW it and duck. That was how life was for pitchers during the 1998 College World Series, and the team responsible for most of their misery was the USC Trojans The Trojan Horse
Trojan comes from Greek mythology, in which the Greeks battled the Trojans (people of Troy). After years of being unable to break into the fortified city, the Greeks built a wooden horse, filled it with soldiers and pretended to sail away. After the Trojans brought the horse into the city, the Greek soldiers crept out at night, opened the gates of Troy to the returning soldiers, and Troy was destroyed.
.

The Trojans, playing what amounted to sudden death because they were in the losers bracket, pounded their way to the championship Saturday by defeating Arizona State 21-14 - a score that on many afternoons would do their football team proud.

Along the way, the Trojans set tournament records for the highest team batting average, .378, and most hits for a player (15, by Jason Lane). They tied Louisiana State for the most home runs in a series (17). The Trojans also set a record for the final game by hitting five home runs.

We congratulate the Trojans for winning their record-setting 12th College World Series. The opposition pitchers have our sympathy.
