EDITORIAL : TOOLS FOR TOMORROW CAMPAIGN SEEKS TO PROVIDE A COMPUTER LAB FOR SCHOOLS.

WHEN it comes to shaping the future of Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, , many avenues present themselves to community-minded individuals looking for Looking for

age, students might find the lab a real eye-opener. Some might see a future career path for themselves. Some may understand, perhaps for the first time, that their math and science classes are relevant to their own lives.

Thus, we are pleased at the success achieved so far by the volunteers who are raising funds for the project. The cost to acquire and operate the lab is $300,000, and commitments have been received for about two-thirds of that, partly through the efforts of the nonprofit A corporation or an association that conducts business for the benefit of the general public without shareholders and without a profit motive.

The project leaders expect that once they get the first trailer, its success will lead to the purchase of up to seven others with their own special focus - biotechnology, multimedia, communications and so forth. The fleet of mobile labs could be dispatched to schools throughout the region.

All that is riding on the effort to raise the last $100,000 for the first lab. We hope they get it soon, and that it triggers many great careers among the next generation of L.A. high-technology leaders.
