Giving of oneself is an integral part of our heritage. Nearly 93 million Americans worked an average of four hours a week at churches, schools, hospitals, museums or in elderly homes last year.

Sadly, however, this is the time of year when a few unscrupulous groups and individuals prey on people's goodwill. As a reminder, never agree to give money over the phone and never give your credit card number to a charity over the phone.

Giving wisely includes investing a little time in research. Investigating the agency before giving is a good idea to ensure the money you give is used to the best advantage. Ask what portion of donor dollars goes to service and what portion goes to administrative and fund-raising fund-raising, large-scale soliciting of voluntary contributions, especially in the United States. Donations do not have to be large to be appreciated. Giving an unwrapped toy to a child at Christmas can make all the difference in a small life. Several local groups are sponsoring toy drives for the holidays.

People who want to reach out during the holiday season can also volunteer their time.
