EDITORIAL : SWEATING THE DETAILS.

TWO years into repairing Los Angeles' schools and work is going pretty much on schedule.

the recommendations of the oversight committee. And the district for months fought all attempts to be responsive to taxpayers and the public.

But perhaps now, with investigators breathing down their necks over the Belmont Learning Center This Belmont Learning Center contains information about a building currently under construction.
It may contain information of a speculative nature, and the content may change dramatically as construction progresses and new information becomes available.
fiasco, the district has finally learned its lesson.

Cooperation can produce results.

So, too, can accountability. Proposition BB officials have taken a tougher stance with some of the project management firms after complaints about their performance during the first year. Although none of the 10 management companies has been fired, four were given less work than others - and therefore less money - to force them to improve.

The district also revamped its own in-house system following a first year with major problems. Projects that originally were handled by the district's facilities staff are now performed mostly by outside contractors outside contractor ncontratista m/f independiente .

The district has designated a full-time coordinator for Proposition BB, allowing for better tracking of projects.

Surprise, surprise, accountability is working.

We congratulate the citizens oversight committee and Chairman Steven Soboroff for staying on the task of making sure buildings are repaired and updated in a timely and cost-efficient manner.

Creating a better learning environment for the children is worth the hard work.
