EDITORIAL : STAY FOCUSED; PETTY RIVALRIES THREATEN TO DERAIL NOHO BID FOR DREAMWORKS.ONE reason why the city is in such disarray is because no one on the City Council is big enough to think about the city as a whole. No one wants to improve one part of the city without getting something back in return. This destructive philosophy is apparent in virtually every decision that works its way through the council. Certainly, it was on display in all its glory last week when the council debated if it should ply DreamWorks SKG SKG Stichting Kwaliteit Gevelbouw (Dutch) SKG Spielberg, Katzenberg, and Geffen (DreamWorks Studios) SKG Thessaloniki, Greece - Thessaloniki (Airport Code) SKG Smith and Kraus Global with tax credits and other incentives to build a home in the North Hollywood redevelopment area. Council President John Ferraro John Ferraro (May 14 1924—April 17 2001) served as a Los Angeles City Councilman from 1966 until his death. Early life Ferraro was born in the working class suburb of Cudahy, California, just south of Los Angeles. and mayoral candidate and Councilman Joel Wachs Joel Wachs served for several terms as Los Angeles City Councilman for the 2nd district. He was first elected by defeating incumbent James B. Potter. While in office, Wachs chaired the Public Works Committee and vice-chair of the Environmental Quality & Waste Management , among many others, believe North Hollywood is the logical spot for the nomadic See nomadic computing. studio to make its permanent home. It has an entertainment district, a subway stop opening nearby and proximity to the Warner Bros BROS Brothers BROS Benefits and Retirement Operations Section (King County, Washington) BROS Barnes and Richmond Operatic Society (London, UK) ., Disney and Universal lots. But three council members, Hal Bernson Hal Bernson served as Los Angeles City Councilman for the 12th district. He was chair of the Transportation Committee. Prior to being on the City Council, he served in the Navy. Preceded by Robert M. , Mike Hernandez and Jackie Goldberg, felt their districts were given the cold shoulder, so they muddied the waters. Bernson complained that the NoHo focus ``cast aside'' locations in his district (we're sure he didn't mean Chatsworth Reservoir), essentially saying they ``don't count.'' So, he said, ``let's give everybody consideration.'' Nothing could be more detrimental to the city's efforts to land the DreamWorks studio, if Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen ever decide to build one. The San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills. stayed out of the fight over the location of the soon-to-open Staples Center. Why can't Bernson, Hernandez and Goldberg stay out of this? It's a good thing there are clear-minded individuals on the council, like Mike Feuer. He understands how important the project would be to NoHo and how the council has a way of stepping on its feet. ``If we do anything other than (focus on the North Hollywood site), I think we're making a mistake,'' he said, ``because we're trying to be all things to all people.'' The only way the city will improve is if there is a unified effort to make it better. |
