EDITORIAL : RINGING SUCCESS LEADERS IN BURBANK AND GLENDALE SUCCESSFULLY WON THE RIGHT TO STICK WITH THE VALLEY AND THE 818 AREA CODE.

THREE cheers for the community leaders in Burbank and Glendale who successfully fought the Public Utilities Commission to keep the 818 area code for their communities and remain part of the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.

Forcing Burbank and Glendale to become part of the San Gabriel Valley The San Gabriel Valley is one of the principal valleys of southern California. It lies to the east of the city of Los Angeles, to the north of the Puente Hills, to the south of the San Gabriel Mountains, and to the west of the Inland Empire.  and share a new 626 area code beginning in June would be like breaking up a family and scattering siblings to the winds.

The Area Code Relief Coalition, which includes major industry players like MCI (1) (Media Control Interface) A high-level programming interface from Microsoft and IBM for controlling multimedia devices. It provides commands and functions to open, play and close the device.

(2) (Microwave Communications Inc.
Telecommunications and the California Cable Television Association, had viewed the breakup as purely a business matter. The area code change was needed, officials said, because the 818 area code is running out of phone numbers.

In October, the PUC (Public Utility Commission) A regulatory body in every state in the U.S. that governs public utilities within its jurisdiction such as electricity, gas, oil, sewer, water, transportation and telephone service. Some states call it the Public Service Commission (PSC).  rejected pleas to keep 2.7 million phone customers in Burbank and Glendale in the 818 area code and part of the Valley. That decision prompted officials from the two communities (and supported by business titans such as Warner Bros BROS Brothers

) to mount an intense lobbying campaign.

Glendale and Burbank officials persuasively argued that their communities belonged - in all ways - to the San Fernando Valley. ``We are part of the San Fernando Valley geographically, we are part of the San Fernando Valley socially, we are part of the San Fernando Valley historically. . . . It's just that simple,'' argued Terry Stevenson, an assistant city attorney for Burbank.

Economically, the two cities and the Valley are intertwined. Most commerce to Burbank and Glendale flows from the Valley. When people in the Valley seek inspiration as to what they want the Valley to be, they often turn to Burbank and Glendale for positive examples.

Critics of the PUC's decision say the move will only shorten the time before another split is needed, and that Burbank and Glendale have only postponed the inevitable. We disagree. It's time It's Time was a successful political campaign run by the Australian Labor Party (ALP) under Gough Whitlam at the 1972 election in Australia. Campaigning on the perceived need for change after 23 years of conservative (Liberal Party of Australia) government, Labor put forward a  the PUC pushed the idea for overlay zones. Such zones allow existing customers to remain in the 818 area and require new customers to get a different area code serving the same geographic area.

The problem with overlay zones now is that today's technology can't fully accommodate them. But technology is bound to catch up before the next split is due.

In the meantime Adv. 1. in the meantime - during the intervening time; "meanwhile I will not think about the problem"; "meantime he was attentive to his other interests"; "in the meantime the police were notified"
meantime, meanwhile
, we congratulate the leaders of Burbank and Glendale for fighting against divvying up the Valley. The Valley united has a nice ring to it.
