EDITORIAL : REMEMBERING THE HEROES.

MEMORIAL Day's here, which means so is summer.

Grab the lotion. Pack a picnic. Snag a prime patch of sand.

And, oh yeah, take a moment to remember America's war dead.

Catch your breath and take a moment longer. Once again, the nation is on a war footing and lives of American men and women are on the line. Think about them this day and all those in harm's way throughout our history as you enjoy the freedom and pleasure of this weekend.

Although the day was set aside to officially reflect on the sacrifices of Americans who gave their lives in battle, more people see it as the kickoff to a summer season of fun.

Revelers head for the airport almost as quickly as they head for the beach, making Memorial Day weekend one of the busiest travel periods of the year for airlines.

Which is understandable. ``Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness'' are viewed in this country as the inalienable rights of freedom. Reveling in life is a worthwhile pursuit.

But it is appropriate to remember those who defended the freedoms we all enjoy. We hope you will find time amid today's festivities to pause a moment and honor all those men and women throughout our history who gave their lives in service to their country.

For our freedom, our wealth, our opportunity, our greatness - Americans owe a gratitude to all those who paid the supreme price while serving as custodians of the nation's defense.

Memorials are as much for the living as they are for the dead. Remember the families and loved ones who were left behind. They, too, deserve our respect on Memorial Day.

And remember to fly Old Glory in tribute to our country's fallen heroes.
