EDITORIAL : PUSHING THE PAY ENVELOPE.

GOVERNMENT employees are paid more than their private-sector counterparts in almost every occupational category for the same responsibilities, job knowledge and work demands, according to a comprehensive federal survey released this year.

That partly explains the large number of Los Angeles city and county employees who get $100,000-a-year salaries or more.

Today is Day 6 for the running list which the Daily News is publishing this week, showing 1,701 local government employees in the six-figure club.

We aren't saying that everyone on the list is overpaid. But voters and taxpayers must wonder how many of them are.
