EDITORIAL : NO-FLY ZONE; BURBANK CITY'S CAMPAIGN TO EDUCATE GLENDALE RESIDENTS ON THE AIRPORT EXPANSION IS A QUESTIONABLE USE OF TAXPAYER MONEY.IT'S a positive sign that Burbank city officials want their Glendale counterparts to take a more active role in resolving the decade-old stalemate stale·mate n. 1. A situation in which further action is blocked; a deadlock. 2. A drawing position in chess in which the king, although not in check, can move only into check and no other piece can move. tr.v. over expansion of Burbank Airport. However, it's troubling that the Burbank City Council would spend $40,000 in taxpayer money to ``educate'' Glendale residents on the issue just before Glendale's April 6 council election. Clearly, they are meddling med·dle intr.v. med·dled, med·dling, med·dles 1. To intrude into other people's affairs or business; interfere. See Synonyms at interfere. 2. To handle something idly or ignorantly; tamper. in the community affairs of their neighboring neigh·bor n. 1. One who lives near or next to another. 2. Just as clearly, Burbank has a legitimate beef. For too long, Glendale has failed to exercise leadership in the debate over building a new terminal at Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport and urging airlines to abide by To stand to; to adhere; to maintain. The commissioners on the nine-member Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority are appointed by the city councils from their respective cities, three each. Lit.: Benét, 1109] See : Time Burbank City Council has required its commissioners to report back to it on the ongoing fight over mandatory curfews and flight restrictions. But Glendale and Pasadena have stayed out of the fight, unwilling (perhaps out of fear of political responsibility) to direct each of their commissioners to stake out a position that would benefit the entire region while respecting the rights of those affected by airport noise. Burbank City Manager Bud Ovrom said the city will not endorse any candidates and will be careful not to overstep state election laws. If Burbank council members as individuals want to help raise money for Glendale candidates, that's one thing. If they want to speak at public forums to debate the issue, that's great.
