Peter Barton Wilson (born August 23, 1933) is an American Republican politician from California. Wilson served as the thirty-sixth Governor of California (1991–1999), the culmination of more than three decades in the public arena that
signed into law this year, the one that will be most debated will be banning smoking in bars and casinos.

That is just one of the lifestyle changes written into law by the Legislature. Californians who are noted for their famous rolling stops will now pay stiffer fines if the wheels keep turning. Raising the fine to $270 from $103 perhaps will get people to think twice before endangering themselves and others by running a red light.

Lawmakers even legislated who gets to dig the wax out of your ears. For years, only doctors had that right. Now, audiologists can legally clean your ears out to administer hearing tests. Sounds too good to be true.

Some Californians might be surprised to find they no longer will be paid overtime after working an eight-hour day. The state's Industrial Welfare Commission voted in April to require employers to pay overtime after workers clock more than 40 hours in a week.

We agree the move is necessary to keep the state competitive and to allow more employees to work under flexible schedules. The state now conforms with federal law. There is no impact on workers covered under collective-bargaining agreements that call for daily overtime.

Happy New Year from your California Legislature
