EDITORIAL : MISSION IMPOSSIBLE; AIR FORCE REPORT CAN'T GROUND UFO SPECULATION.

JUST for starters, we want to emphasize our strong preference for authorities to provide the public with too much information instead of too little.

From that perspective, we aren't complaining about the new Air Force report on military activities that flying-saucer fans might have construed as evidence of extraterrestrials crashing in 1947 near Roswell, N.M.

We are pleased that the report was issued. At least, it lets the public know more about U.S. military activities in the past half-century, including Cold War espionage Cold War espionage describes the intelligence gathering activities during the Cold War between NATO and the Warsaw Pact. But we wonder if anyone at the Pentagon really expected the report to achieve its purpose of dampening speculation about UFOs. If the Air Force brass truly expected that, it casts doubt on their - pardon us - military intelligence.

And maybe the proverbial ``green men'' are the cashiers who handle greenbacks in space bookstores and Roswell-area tourist spots.
