EDITORIAL : MERCER IN DISTRICT 11.On June 3, voters in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills. have another chance to send City Hall a clear and convincing message that the days of taxation without representation are over. That's why the Daily News Editorial Board endorses Tarzana resident Georgia Mercer in the City Council election for the 11th District. Mercer has a distinguished record of leadership and community activism in a broad range of areas. As a Valley representative of Mayor Richard Riordan Richard J. Riordan (born May 1, 1930) is a Republican politician from California, U.S. who served as the California Secretary of Education from 2003–2005 and as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1993–2001. Riordan ran for Governor of California unsuccessfully in 2002. , she has experience working the bureaucratic system. Yet we believe her first allegiance is to the public, not the entrenched en·trench also in·trench v. en·trenched, en·trench·ing, en·trench·es v.tr. 1. To provide with a trench, especially for the purpose of fortifying or defending. 2. status quo [Latin, The existing state of things at any given date.] Status quo ante bellum means the state of things before the war. The status quo to be preserved by a preliminary injunction is the last actual, peaceable, uncontested status which preceded the pending controversy. of City Hall. This council district stretches from the Valley to the Westside, including much of Woodland Hills, Tarzana and Encino, and parts of Sherman Oaks and Van Nuys. These areas need a representative with broad experience and perspective, especially Van Nuys, which is partitioned into four council districts. Mercer is vying for the seat with Cindy Miscikowski Cindy Miscikowski represented the 11th District on the Los Angeles City Council for two full terms from 1997 through 2005. Previously, she was an aide to Councilman Marvin Braude and the Executive Director of the Skitball Cultural Center in its beginning stages. , a former deputy to retiring Councilman Marvin Braude Marvin Braude (August 11, 1920—December 7, 2005)served as Los Angeles City Councilman for the 11th district from 1965 to 1997. At various times Mr. Braude (pronounced BROW-dee) served as chair of the Finance and Revenue Committee, the Environmental Quality and Waste . Braude has endorsed Miscikowski. Miscikowski is a talented, earnest and experienced public servant who knows how to get things done in the bureaucracy. But her home is on the Westside, leaving voters in the Valley to wonder if home is where the heart is also. The Valley needs more representation on the council, not less. Mercer's roots are in the Valley. We trust her to have a keener awareness of the Valley's needs and a scrappier attitude toward fighting for the Valley's fair share of tax dollars and services. |
