For example, partly as a result of Hollywood's image-making influence and partly because of the labor supply, the apparel industry has more manufacturing jobs in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  - some 150,000 jobs - than in any other place in the nation.

People who work in wholesaling, manufacturing and design of apparel and textiles do a brisk Brisk as a proper name may refer to:

 business, worth more than $24 billion a year in the Los Angeles region.

In terms of dollar value, it's only the eighth-largest industry in this region - a testament to the diversity of the economy here. Regardless, any industry that ranks in the top 10 certainly is worth supporting and saluting.

A tip of the hat is especially timely for the fashion industry because Sunday will be a big day for California-based designers and manufacturers. At the California Mart in downtown L.A., they will throw the spotlight on the annual preview of their new spring clothing lines and present awards to industry stars.

The events could provide some balance in a large industry that often gets knocked for abuses perpetrated by some individuals. Both the public and the industry have reeled at disclosures of unlawful working conditions, including some by contractors sewing sewing: see needlework.  clothing for brand-name apparel-makers and retailers. Such abuses shock the public conscience, and industry leaders are correct to step up their efforts to wipe them out.

But an industry this large defies easy categorization, and there also is much good worth celebrating - not the least of which are thousands of good jobs and the smug smug
